Do I sense a pattern here?

Pattern and repetition is one of the basic elements of composition.  Lucky for photographers, patterns are everywhere.  Up. Down. All around.   Repetitive patterns in photography create a certain movement that the eyes enjoy following.  Patterns alone are a bit ho-hum.  The trick is to find a cool subject and use pattern to complement the subject in a unique way.

Here are some patterns I found in town today...

99%

I can't avoid walking past 'Occupy Boston' on my way to and from work every day.  Today, for 'In Town Tuesday', I took a closer look.  I walked right through this tent city, examining the living quarters of the protesters.  I read the signs, I looked at the literature, I stopped to listen to a speaker for a bit.  Still, I am 99% confused about what specifically it is that these people are trying to accomplish.

I am 99% sure that even if we figure out what they are trying to do nothing is going to happen. Sorry, that's so glass half empty, I know.

I am also 99% annoyed they tried to take over the Rose Kennedy greenway, a super cool beautiful open space with great outdoor art

I am 99% sure I don't want to do my dishes here

I am 99% happy I don't have to sleep here this winter

Also I am 99% sure I hate street photography. I'm too much of a nervous nelly to be doing much of that s&;(t!!

blue skies

One thing that's for sure:  taking photos every day really makes you start to look at the world differently.

Did you ever play too much tetris in the 80's and then when you went to bed that night you could see those little blocks falling behind your eyelids?  It's sort of like that.  I constantly wonder how things will look within the camera's frame now.  I am always paying attention to the light.  Is it good?  bad?  not nearly enough for my slow lens?  or just... perfect?  I notice the little things more; bugs on the ground or sunlight dancing in Lillian's hair.  I've also been noticing some big things lately.  Like the clouds.  What will they do today?    Recently I've noticed they are always so cool looking.  I have a funny feeling they've always been this way, I just wasn't paying attention.

I walk around downtown Boston with my head straight up in the air a lot now.  People look at me funny and I don't care.  It's a wonder I don't run into something.  Before this project I never noticed how intricate some of the old buildings are.  One of these in town tuesdays I will highlight some of my favorites.

But for today (let's call it a belated in town tuesday) it was all about the sky.  I could not get over how blue it was.  I did not edit these photos in any way although the blue is so surreal they look photoshopped....

now I know my A,B,Cs... Boston style

continued from 3 weeks ago...

OK it's not boston, but it's my town, and part of Boston Proper. I couldn't resist.

Now I know my ABCs Boston style cont'd

continued from three weeks ago...

OK I admit I've been stalling.  I couldn't think of anything for J.

I was going to go with Jazz, but it turns out the Good Life has been taken over by someone and it's now just a boring ol' nightclub in Downtown Crossing.  Fortunately, people in Chinatown like jazz. Especially with their Dim Sum.  Seriously, don't you?

And just in case you forget where you are:

I was all about getting a photo of the Leather District today.  But do you think I could find a sign anywhere that said Leather District?  Nope.  Could be because it's the smallest 'neighborhood' in Boston occupying only about two blocks between Chinatown and South Station.  This is pretty much it.

And have you been here yet?  I haven't. But when I do, I probably won't be bringing the kids.
shame on me for forgetting my camera was on manual focus on this one.  grrr. it was the only one I took so it will have to do.

5/24/11

a different town

I'm interrupting the regularly scheduled ABC weekly theme to bring you a special edition of In Town Tuesday:  In Town New York City.

Traveling to the Big Apple is a lot of work.  It's crowded, noisy, and overwhelming.  The subways are difficult to navigate with strollers and elevators are few and far between.   Strap a 25 pound feverish 2.5 year old to your body, push a 35 pound 4 year old in a stroller, place yourself in Times Square about 10 minutes before the "end of the world", add a little rain and you've got yourself one hot mess. This, by the way, is my favorite phrase ever, courtsey of my friend Jenny D :)

This is not to say we didn't have fun.  We did.  Travelling with kids is hard, but the experiences we are giving them are hopefully worth every ounce of trouble we go through.

Without further ado, here are the highlights!

The crew:
Sammy (6), Grayson (4.6), Ben(4.8), Lillian (2.1)

The destination: World's Largest Dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History
a super cool panorama of a life size brontosaurus!

Best sandbox in the city: ( a kid sized archeological dig).. Kids entertained, parents happy.

The elephants!

Amazing dioramas:
Ben's favorite animal of all time:  The Jaguar
The AMNH is an impossible place to take photos, btw.  Well, at least with the equipment I had.  It's so dark and everything is soo huge.  Really need a fast wide angle lens and a tripod.

The fountain at Lincoln Center:

The Big Piano and the Nursery at FAO Shwarz! (Lillian was in baby heaven)

The hotel:
Lillian woke up at least 5 times a night asking to go "ome", while Ben whined the last morning that he wanted to live at the hotel FOREVER.

Mommy's late night photo field trip (and the reason I carried the tripod all the way to NYC)!!
reflection of Lincoln Center fountain at nite - ISO 400, f/3.5, 1/30, 28mm

across the street from our hotel
ISO 100, f/22, 30s, 35mm

And, last but not least, the reason for the trip:  my dear friend and Lillian's godmother, Vicki!
                   pre-Madonna concert, circa 2002                                           May 2011

We haven't aged a bit, right?
